"The Irishman" -
I have two pieces of advice for you all: Never put a fish in your car. And when you can, run, don't walk, to see THE IRISHMAN https://t.co/6c79zrAHhO— Stephanie Zacharek (@szacharek) September 28, 2019
THE IRISHMAN is good! takes 90 minutes to lock in & clear out the cobwebs / adjust to CGI, but the scope is a virtue, the performances are killer (Joseph! Frank! Pesci!) & it eventually coheres into a heart-stopping meditation on the myopia of time. an old man movie for the ages.— david ehrlich (@davidehrlich) September 27, 2019
THE IRISHMAN is like a greatest hits album from a master of the medium. Yes, that’s a positive.— erickohn (@erickohn) September 27, 2019
The artifice of de-aging is more feature than bug.
It’s not “slow.” It often moves like lightening & elsewhere it’s downright Bressonian.
This is not a review! Those are embargoed.
My full review will be up later, but let me just add: this is De Niro's best work in YEARS. And while Pacino is great in a flashy role, Pesci really steals the show, turning in probably the most quiet performance of his career— Chris Evangelista (@cevangelista413) September 27, 2019
#TheIrishman is a crime epic, a buddy pic, and a melancholy reflection on mortality. De Niro, Pacino, and especially Pesci, are all phenomenal. This is one of Scorsese’s best works. Here’s my review https://t.co/ra8Ax2NNd4— Chris Evangelista (@cevangelista413) September 28, 2019
Here's me on de-aging, what makes a great actor, and (yes) THE IRISHMAN: https://t.co/9EW3gxAp4A— Bilge Ebiri (@BilgeEbiri) September 28, 2019
marty! THE IRISHMAN! i liked it! https://t.co/WoslfQOQiB— karen han (@karenyhan) September 28, 2019
The story is complex without ever being convoluted, exploring both sides of the loyalty coin that speaks volumes about today’s politics. The whole cast is at their A-game here (ESPECIALLY Pacino). If this is their last time together, boy they made it count. #NYFF @netflix pic.twitter.com/fwfL1yQ17T— Kevin L. Lee @ NYFF (@Klee_FilmReview) September 27, 2019
This is also similar to what Tarantino did with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, in that Scorsese is exploring new territory here. It celebrates his existing strengths and what he’s best known for in the genre, but it also lives and breathes a different tone and atmosphere. #NYFF pic.twitter.com/dBbDrDL4HZ— Kevin L. But there’s another layer of respect on this, that it constantly feels like it’s the last film these people will ever make. It feels like the last time you’ll see Robert De Niro on the big screen. It feels like the last film Scorsese will ever make. #TheIrishman #NYFF pic.twitter.com/FGbj7rYRnG— Kevin L. Lee @ NYFF (@Klee_FilmReview) September 27, 2019
Anyway THE IRISHMAN is like a movie genetically engineered to my interests so take my recommendation or leave it, but I think it’s a terrific picture - and an A+ example of a late period director saying, “oh, this is what you want?” and stabbing you in the fucking neck with it— Jason Bailey 😬🥺😭 (@jasondashbailey) September 27, 2019
